Mayank Bawa

Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder

Mayank Bawa is CEO and co-founder of Aster Data, where he leads the company's strategic planning, management and technology development. He has led the company as it matured from an idea based on the co-founders research at Stanford University to an enterprise software company powering the most advanced customer data warehouses. Mayank has a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from IIT-Bombay, and a Master's and Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Stanford University. Mayank was the recipient of the Stanford Graduate Fellowship (Sequoia Capital Fellow) at Stanford University during his doctorate studies. Mayank has published a dozen academic papers in top database conferences and has been affiliated with IBM Research and Microsoft Research.

Tasso Argyros

Chief Technology Officer and Co-Founder

Tasso (Tassos) Argyros is the CTO and co-founder of Aster Data, where he is responsible for all product and engineering operations of the company. Tasso was recently recognized as one of BusinessWeek's Best Young Tech Entrepreneurs for 2009 and was an SAP fellow at the Stanford Computer Science department. While at Stanford, Tasso was pursuing a Ph.D. in the Distributed Systems Group with a focus on designing cluster architectures for fast, parallel data processing using large farms of commodity servers. He holds an MsC in Computer Science from Stanford University and a Diploma in Computer and Electrical Engineering from Technical University of Athens.

Mark Cranney

Executive Vice President of Worldwide Field Operations

Mark has over 20 years of sales management experience, with a strong focus on selling and deploying enterprise software into the Global 2000. He comes to Aster from Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ), where he was the Vice President of the Americas for the Software and Solutions business unit. Prior to HP, Mark was the Executive Vice President of Worldwide Field Operations at Opsware (NASDAQ: OPSW), where he built and led an international sales, services, and support organization that grew sales from $18 million to $102 million prior to Opsware being acquired by HP in 2007 for $1.65B. Before joining Opsware, Mark was the Senior Vice President of the Americas at Parametric Technology Corporation (NASDAQ: PMTC). Prior to that, he held sales leadership roles at Verathon Inc., C.R. Bard Inc. (NYSE: BCR), and Lanier. Mark holds a Bachelor's of Science in Business Administration from Southern Utah University, where he was also a four-year letterman on the football team.

Sharmila Shahani-Mulligan

Executive Vice President of Worldwide Marketing

Sharmila most recently was CMO of the Business Technology Optimization business within HP Software, where she was responsible for the go-to-market strategy for a multi-billion dollar software portfolio. Before joining HP, Sharmila served as EVP of Marketing at Opsware, Inc. (NASDAQ: OPSW), a leader in the Data Center Automation market. Sharmila led marketing from the start of Opsware in 2002 to its eventual acquisition by HP for $1.65B in 2007. Before Opsware, Sharmila served as VP of Marketing and Business Development for Totality, a managed services provider focused on e-business operations. Previously, she was VP of Marketing for AOL's E-commerce Services group. Upon AOL's acquisition of Netscape, Sharmila was a key member of the integration committee focused on the launch of Sun's iPlanet business. Prior to this, Sharmila was VP of Marketing at Netscape Communications, responsible for Netscape's infrastructure product line. She was also an early member of Kiva Software, which was acquired by Netscape, where she was instrumental in driving the creation of the Application Server market. Sharmila has also held managerial positions at General Magic and Microsoft. She received her MBA from the Kellogg School of Management and her BA and BS from Northwestern University.

Raj Pai

Vice President of Strategic Alliances

Raj has a track record of more than 18 years of successfully defining and delivering market-leading product and partner solutions. Most recently, Raj led the product management team at Informatica (NASD: INFA) where he managed a global team driving strategy and execution for all data warehousing and analytics solutions, including highly successful partnerships with Siebel, Hyperion and SAP. Previously, Raj was VP of Marketing at Enosys software, a pioneer in the XML-based enterprise information integration (EII) market. Raj led business development and marketing initiatives which resulted in the eventual sale of the company to BEA. Earlier in his career, Raj developed and launched Tibco’s (NASD: TIBX) hosted and server-based portal products, working closely with strategic partners including SAP, Yahoo and Nokia. Raj began his career as a design engineer at Intel building Intel’s Pentium product line. Raj has an MBA from UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business, a M.S. from University of Hawaii and a B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. Outside of work, Raj enjoys coaching his son’s soccer team and playing tennis with his daughter. Raj is also a big fan of eating and cooking ethnic food from different parts of the world.
