George Candea


George is a Professor of Computer Science at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne, where he heads the Dependable Systems Laboratory. He co-founded Aster Data with Mayank Bawa and Tasso Argyros in 2005 and then served as Chief Technology Officer and subsequently Chief Scientist until 2009. George received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University in 2005, where he developed high-availability technologies for large-scale computer systems. That same year, he was named one of the Top 35 Young Technology Innovators by the MIT Technology Review. Previously, he was a co-founder of the Recovery-Oriented Computing (ROC) project and has held positions at Oracle Corporation, IBM Research, and Microsoft Research. George received his B.S. and M.Eng. degrees in Computer Science from MIT.

Joe Horowitz

Joe Horowitz has been a general partner of JAFCO Ventures since its formation in 2003, bringing to JAFCO 25 years of experience working with early stage companies as a venture capitalist, advisor and entrepreneur. Joe is passionate about the value creation process and loves working with talented entrepreneurs. In addition to Aster Data, Joe has been actively involved with Attributor, Avnera, Calypto Design Systems, Cortina Systems, Devicescape Software, FireEye, Infinera (INFN), MarketLive, Meebo, Mimosa Systems, Oodle, Proofpoint, RedSeal Systems and SiTime.

Doug Leone

Sequoia Capital

Douglas Leone is a Managing Partner at Sequoia Capital focusing on Internet and systems investments. Prior to joining Sequoia Capital in 1988, Doug held sales and sales management positions at Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard and Prime Computer. Doug has a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University, an MS in Industrial Engineering from Columbia University, and an M.S. in Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In addition to Aster Data, Doug has been responsible for Sequoia Capital's investments in Hyperion (Oracle), Netezza, NetShops, Sentient Networks (Cisco) and many others.

Anand Rajaraman

Cambrian Ventures

Anand Rajaraman is a Founding Partner of Cambrian Ventures. Prior to founding Cambrian Ventures in 2000, Anand was Director of Technology at, where he was responsible for technology strategy. Anand helped launch the transformation of from a retailer into a retail platform, enabling third-party retailers to sell on's website. Anand came to in 1998 through the $250 Million acquisition of Junglee, a database technology company that he co-founded. Anand has extensive research and development experience at Stanford University, AT&T Bell Labs, and Xerox PARC. Anand serves as Consulting Assistant Professor at Stanford University's Computer Science Department. In addition to Aster, Anand has been responsible for Cambrian Ventures' investments in Kaltix (Google) and Transformic (Google).

David Kellogg

Independent Board Member

Dave Kellogg is CEO of unstructured information infrastructure provider Mark Logic Corporation, recently named the fourth fastest growing IT company in Silicon Valley. Prior to Mark Logic, Kellogg ran marketing at business intelligence vendor Business Objects during the period it grew from $30M to over $850M in annual revenues. Previously, Kellogg was VP of marketing at object DBMS provider Versant Corp. and worked in both technical and marketing positions at Ingres Corp., one of the original providers of relational database management systems.

Steve currently serves on the Board of Directors of MarkMonitor and is also Board Observer at Handango, Motion Computing, RGB Networks, and Tripwire.
